The Goring gets ready for its 100th birthday next year
and unveils six silky new rooms…
Summer 2009: The Goring in Belgravia has just revealed the dramatic transformation of six of the best rooms in the hotel, using hand woven, historic silk wall covering.
The project is part of the hotel’s preparations for its 100th birthday next year. The Goring was opened in 1910 by Mr O R Goring whose great-grandson Jeremy is now the fourth Goring to run The Goring. It is now the only five star luxury hotel in London that is owned and run by the family that built it.
For the past few years Jeremy has been overseeing the quiet transformation of the hotel, using British designers including Nina Campbell and David Linley. The latest of these is history aficionado and antiques expert Russell Sage. Russell is also the Creative Director of Gainsborough Silk Weavers, the Royal Warrant-holding textile mill in Suffolk. As well as supplying fabrics to the Royal Palaces, the company’s client list includes the White House; British Embassies around the world; 10 Downing Street and the first class staterooms of the Titanic. Gainsborough still holds an archive of 7,000 historic fabrics – from which Jeremy Goring chose six different silks, one for each room.
The fabrics Jeremy chose were originally designed for, amongst others, Osborne House (Queen Victoria’s house on the Isle of Wight); the British Embassy in Paris; the State carriages in the Royal Mews and the Buckingham Palace archives. The colours range from gold to deep blue and all the furniture has been designed by Russell Sage Studio especially for the rooms.
The result is a winning blend of British quality, glamour and plenty of character.
Jeremy says: “We wanted The Goring to looks its best for our centenary next year and these rooms are just what we hoped for. They have a real sense of history and Englishness. They are proper Goring rooms, a real contribution to our ongoing history.”

About The Goring
The Goring was opened by Otto Goring in 1910. As its centenary approaches, it is now the only five star luxury hotel in London that is owned and run by the family that built it. Jeremy Goring is the fourth Goring to run The Goring since his great-grandfather opened it. Deep in the heart of Belgravia, just behind Buckingham Palace, The Goring is within strolling distance of the Royal Parks and the best shops, theatres and galleries in town.
The Goring will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2010 and the interiors are currently being refreshed by some of the country s finest designers. There are 71 individually designed, classically English rooms and suites, many overlooking the garden. The Dining Room, designed by David Linley, is a haven for superbly cooked English food using British ingredients. The Bar has been gloriously transformed by designer Tim Gosling in a theatrical, Empire style, with gilded ceilings, swagged curtains and bespoke carpets. Six of the hotel s guestrooms are currently being transformed by designer Russell Sage, using historical silks from the archives of Gainsborough Silks, Royal Warrant Holders.
Above all, The Goring reflects one family's passion for quality whose members have prided themselves on providing comfort, good food and drink and the most attentive service for almost one hundred years.
